FHN Teachers participate in the 5K

What’s better than one FHSD school helping our community? Two FHSD schools working together to help!
In August, the FHN Football Team held their first “Knights Give Bear Necessities” 5K. The event benefited the efforts of Bear Necessities, a program at Henderson Elementary that provides food to students in need. The program currently feeds more than 60 students, and partners with Harvester Church of the Nazarene to feed these students over the weekend when they can’t get school lunches. FHN Football Coach Brett Bevill, an alum of Henderson and FHN, heard about the organization and saw an opportunity for the team to help their community.

The 5K route began in the FHN football stadium, traveled through Laurel Park, and ended with a dash to the 50-yard line. The football players cheered on the participants and threw passes to the finishers. “It was a very satisfying way to end a race. The crowd was all smiles!” said Bevill. More than a dozen FHN teachers were among the 85 participants and ran their way to the finish line in support of Bear Necessities. “I think the number of people that participated helped bring the community together to help a great cause,” said FHN student and football player Patrick Koester.

“It’s important to support local backpack food programs such as Bear Necessities,” said Bevill. “Those that don’t know where or when their next meal is coming from are given the comfort in knowing that programs like this exist to help.” Activities Director Mike Janes also played a big role in the creation of the event and saw the importance of helping their feeder elementary school. “These are students that will be walking our halls one day,” said Janes.

Coach Bevill presents Bear Necessities with check from the 5KWhile this year’s event was a success and raised $250 for the program, Bevill already has big plans for next year. “The first year was great, but I really see it growing to a much bigger event.” To further support Bear Necessities, the football team also designated their Oct. 5 game against FHHS as a Bear Necessities game. They offered discounted tickets to anyone who brought food to donate. The food and the money raised from the 5K was presented to the Bear Necessities at halftime.

“We were very touched by the kindness of others to take care for our students,” says Henderson teacher and Bear Necessities organizer, Tonya Bratsch. “When students’ basic needs are met they can come to school better prepared to be ready to learn.” The students of Henderson, including some future Knights, can rest easy knowing that FHN is already looking out for them. Congratulations to Coach Bevill and the football team on a successful first year of the Knights Give Bear Necessities 5K!
